While my dad was still alive he and I did some genealogical research.  We spent a lot of time in libraries in the towns where we knew that people in the family were born and died (this was in 1997, at the time not as much was available online as there is now).  I am still missing definitive information about a single generation from the Revolutionary War period, but otherwise I have everything back to Sarah Chilton's arrival on the Mayflower in 1620.

The best place to start is with family members who are still alive who can give information.  I have a lot of info on family since my Great-great-grandfather's birth in 1812, part of which was provided by my dad's recollection of a family plot that none of us had ever been to.  So I would check in with parents and grandparents first.  Also, ask if they knew of any rumors in the family about it's origins.  Sometimes those rumors end up being based on a truth, somewhere along the line.

Military and church records can be just as helpful as civil records in town halls and libraries.  In some communities in the 1700s, churches were the only recorders of vital statistics.  Also in generations past some states maintained records on members of the state militia, those records can be helpful until about 1880 or so.  One thing I have found is that generally the further back you go, the less complete the information becomes... but not always.  In my own research the worst period for records was 1760-1812.  A lot can happen in 50 years...

Good luck on your searches, and remember that future generations of your family may be very grateful for the research that you may do now. Smiley

Here are a couple more things: try to construct a family tree, even if you don't like making pictures.  There is software to help with it, and it's often available very cheap.  Using a family tree allows a visual display of the information, which can be VERY helpful if you have a lot of people in the family with the same first name (like George Robert, son of George William, son of George Elliot  etc).

Also, you obviously are looking for info about your Irish heritage.  There may eventually be some information that can only be obtained by actually going to Ireland.  Even in this era of online info, some things are still just stored in bound volumes on the shelves of old churches.

Also, don't be discouraged if you run up against a wall as far as finding information.  Sometimes it takes years to get one piece of information.  That has been the case in my own family.  Genealogy is a science that requires incredible patience.  Wink

Best wishes on your search, Sean. So many were inspired to look at their heritage after the great book and TV series, Roots, by Alex Haley. Sadly, my own German lineage from there likely vanished in the countless wars and destruction of vital records in churches and government facilities in the 20th century. Wish I had Irish blood in me but my Celtic likely comes from the continent. Keep us posted on what you discover.

update on background

Brady- (IRISH) Anglicized form Gaelic (O' Bradaigh) Decendant of Bradach' a by name the meaning of which is not clear it is unlikely to be connected with Gaelic Brandach "theiving" , "dishonest"; which has a short first vowel.

Hmmmm.... I don't actually know.  Maybe someone else would know.  One who might know is "Maggie."  She is an older lady who spent a lot of her life in Ireland who was once a member in the Celtic Woman Forum, but she has since moved on from there.  Wish I knew how to contact her for you.

of a lovely lady
who was bringing up three very lovely girls
All of them had hair of gold like their mother
The youngest one in curls" .....

Hahahaha.... honestly I don't know, but that's what popped into my head.
